IEEE Applied Electromagnetics Conference AEMC 2007 was held in Kolkata during December 19-20, 2007. This has been organized by the IEEE Antennas and Propagation & Microwave Theory and Techniques Chapter of the IEEE Calcutta Section. This International conference was attended by about 150 delegates and researchers from different parts of the Globe. Many National Research and Defense Laboratories and multinational RF Industries have actively participated.
In the keynote lecture, Prof. Raj Mittra uniquely addressed the myth and mysteries of Metamaterials – today’s most discussed area in microwave engineering. Prof. Tapan K Sarkar of Syracuse University gave a plenary talk on a new look to Maxwell’s contributions and his EM Theory which was highly appreciated by all.
Two organized sessions with interactive panel discussions and eight technical sessions fitted in the two day conference made it very compact and lively. Various aspects and challenges in Microwave education for the new generation engineers have been critically discussed in one organized session conducted by Dr. J. C. Goswami of Schlumberger, USA. Many distinguished experts from academia and industries took part in that two hour long discussion. Their thoughts and recommendations have been noted and will be published through IEEE society magazines.
In the other organized session, the status of the microstrip technology was reviewed and discussed for the last decade in Indian purview. The session was conducted by Prof. R. K. Mishara of Berhampur University, India and was dedicated to the memory of late Prof. K. C. Gupta a great educator who first initiated microstrips research in India.
The banquet dinner served with delicious Indian food was arranged on December 19 on a boat cruise. That night trip on river Hooghly, flowing by the western side of Kolkata - the City of Joy was highly enjoyable. A welcome dinner was offered by Webel, the leading electronics industry and entrepreneur in West Bengal, to attract the international experts for some kinds of collaborations and foreign entrepreneurship. Altogether, this two day international meeting of the Electromangetics Experts, professionals and researchers was a grand success.
